The default device is the Speakers, the default communications device is the headset. I made an unused input the default communications device, which made the headset a standard device with no default tag. The volume still controls the headset, it appears that anything which is giving an output is there when the speaker icon is clicked and the control buttons adjust these.

Default is selected using right click on speaker icon - playback devices. That Panel shows the speakers and headphones on two separate lines and options to select only one of them as default.. I have checked "Mute all other sounds" in the Communications tab of Sounds in Device Manager. I have updated drivers.
